The heart chakra (in Sanskrit ‘anahata’) is our fourth chakra and it’s the bridge between the lower, more dense chakras (root, sacral, and solar plexus) and the higher, more ethereal chakras (throat, third eye, and crown). The key aspects of the heart chakra are love, compassion, acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, and letting go (also known as loving detachment).

A healthy heart chakra allows you to feel sympathy for others, and to have healthy boundaries around empathy. I have a very helpful little TikTok video about this if you want to know more.

Harmony is one of the best words to describe this chakra. A healthy vibrating heart chakra helps us bring harmony into relationships with both others and ourselves. This chakra teaches us to love unconditionally, accept things as they are, to have gratitude and make loving detachment a daily practice.

Through healing the heart chakra we first find acceptance within ourselves, meaning we accept ourselves and love ourselves unconditionally for who we are. Once that is achieved, we are able to extend that same love, acceptance, and gratitude to other people and situations in our lives.

Energetic blockages in the heart chakra manifest as bitterness, codependency, passive aggressiveness, and being emotionally unavailable. When the heart chakra is blocked, a person can be in a room surrounded by friends and family, yet still feel intense loneliness at their core.

Another extremely common manifestation of an energy block in the heart chakra is a person who constantly and excessively puts the needs of others before themselves. It’s not as cute as it sounds and it’s quite detrimental on an energetic level. Sadly, society often sends toxic messages that a woman’s value is only measured in how they show up for other people in their lives; such as being a good parent, a good spouse, caregiver, etc. Think about how many times you hear women get praised for their caregiving roles rather than their personal achievements. It’s disproportionate when you compare this to men. This convo can easily trail off into the problematic gender roles posed by heteronormative societal standards, so I’m going to end this rant here :)

Here is a list of the best foods to feed your heart chakra

Green colored foods

Green is the color that resonates with the vibration of the heart chakra. Foods of this color are very nourishing for this chakra. Make sure to eat a variety of both raw and cooked greens.

Examples of green colored foods that are good for the heart chakra

  • Green leafy vegetables of any and every kind (ex: spinach, collard greens, broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, mustard greens, bok choy)

  • Kiwis

  • Green apples

  • Green beans

  • Okra

  • Avocado

  • Cucumber

Cacao

Cacao is a well known heart chakra opener, hence the popularity of cacao ceremonies. (by the way our ancestors were doing cacao ceremonies long before it resurfaced and became popular in our modern day world)

To reap the benefits make sure that it is raw cacao. If choosing a chocolate bar, choose at least 70% cacao or higher. In general, I recommend going for raw cacao nibs or raw cacao powder.

Fun fact: chocolate is my favorite food. I don’t think I could last a week without it :)
